Alternatives To The Mirror Wardrobe

March 30th, 2010, Posted in Fitted Wardrobes, armoire, wardrobe closets

By going online, a shopper can usually locate a portable wardrobe. By shopping online, someone who wants to buy a bonnetiere can normally find an attractive, wardrobe storage unit, and one with the desired window. Still, not every type of wardrobe furniture can be found by sitting at a computer and using a search engine. Such a search might “come up empty,” if meant to reveal information on a mirror wardrobe.

By the same token, a search for a corner wardrobe could fail to produce results. Pictures of the mirror wardrobe are difficult to find online. Still, some of the other wardrobes could easily serve as an alternative to a mirror wardrobe. A mirror could be placed on the door of such a storage unit.

A wardrobe does not have to come with a mirror, in order to perform its intended function. Furniture units called “wardrobes” are designed to aid the storage of clothing, especially clothes that wrinkle easily. When a room contains a wardrobe, those clothes can hang in that same piece of furniture, rather than lying, folded in a dresser drawer.

Today, clothes often hang in a bedroom closet. Yet a wardrobe has certain features that are not found in a closet. For example, an armoire, unlike a closet, can be moved from one location to another. Furthermore, a closet does not have a window in its door. One type of armoire does have a window, one that reveals the contents of that storage unit.

Of course, a satisfactory form of storage does not need to have a window. Efficient storage of clothing does not require the availability of a mirror. Therefore, an online shopper should not rule out the possibility of conducting an examination of the various alternatives to the mirror wardrobe. Those alternatives offer the same durability and the same attractive features that are found in any quality wardrobe.

Using Wardrobe Furniture As a Versatile Piece of Decorating Art

Wardrobe furniture was created to solve a problem. A number of fabrics form wrinkles, whenever they are folded. Therefore any clothing made from such fabrics should not be folded and stored in a drawer. Such clothing should be hung in a closet or wardrobe. While both a closet and wardrobe solve the same problem, those two solutions have a couple different features.

Unlike a closet, some wardrobes can be moved from room to room. That particular type of wardrobe furniture is called a portable wardrobe. Unlike a closet, some wardrobes come with a “window” on their door. The bonnetiere is such a wardrobe.

Like closet space, a wardrobe can be designed to fit in a corner. When a piece of wardrobe furniture occupies a corner it is called a corner wardrobe. Like closet space, something that furnishes a room with wardrobe storage space can be provided with a mirror. The reflection coming from a mirror wardrobe can serve to emphasize the beauty of the furniture in a room.

The original wardrobes had an important place in any bedroom. Those early wardrobes provided a bedroom with hanging space for clothing. The users of the first wardrobe furniture lived in homes that lacked closet space. Those early wardrobes reflected the accepted furniture design of the period, the period of time when they were created.

Today, not all wardrobes have that same ornate design. At the present time, one can find updated, more modern looking wardrobes. At www.cb2.com, an online shopper can find a wall mounted wardrobe. At www.westelm.com, one can locate and order a wooden wardrobe that sits on gunmetal legs. At the website that offers PotteryBarn furniture, one can find a wardrobe with a more traditional look. By entering “Belvedere armoire” or “Ashby Collection” into the proper space, an Internet user can call up the desired web page and learn more about wardrobe furniture.

The Bonnetiere: A Unique Piece for the Home

March 23rd, 2010, Posted in Bonnetieres, armoire, wardrobe closets

A bonnetiere is a narrow, tall cupboard. As the name implies, it was first created and used in the French regions. It first came into use in Normandy and Brittany during the 1600s and 1700s. The bonnetiere looks like a large antique-style wardrobe. Unlike a wardrobe, though, it only has a single door. Bonnetieres got their name because of their first purpose. They were originally used for storing the very high bonnets that were so fashionable for ladies in the 17th and 18th centuries. That is what gives Bonnetieres their characteristic shape, and why they are usually only half as wide as the usual wardrobe or armoire.

A bonnetiere may have a mirrored on the door. It may also have a single drawer built in underneath the door. In some cases, this imposing armoire-style piece has a glass door and a series of shelves beneath. Most of the time, however, it is the wood itself and the decorative carving on the door itself that is the main attraction. Bonnetieres are crafted from fine woods like walnut, with delicate hand staining and exquisitely detailed carvings. Country French Interiors and Charme D’atan both offer high-end bonnetieres online. Be aware, though, these products are in a higher price range.

Because this piece of furniture is in the same class as the armoire, it often looks attractive in the bedroom or dressing room. It can be used to store clothing or linens. Antique designs do tend to blend well with elegant surroundings in master suites. Another good location for a bonnetiere is the formal dining area. Some styles have a single glass door above a lower set of drawers. It can be used for displaying fine china or heirloom silver pieces. Of course, the living room offers a nice opportunity to showcase the elegant carpentry that is so characteristic of these pieces. The bonnetiere is a large piece of furniture that can dominate a smaller room, so choose its location carefully. Bonnetieres require no special tools for installation. Some homeowners like to place coasters or foot protectors at the base to protect carpeting.

When it comes to high end built in options, there is literally no end to the possibilities. While in the past, even luxurious closets were still only for carefully storing clothing, accessories and shoes, today the discerning closet designer can include sitting areas, storage islands and even built in armoires with mirrored doors. When constructing new homes today, builders realize that as much as 20 percent of the home’s square footage should be reserved for storage areas and closets.

The addition of islands in built in closets is a growing trend and one that provides the ability to add custom storage areas based on the owner’s needs and desires. These islands serve several functions with drawers that can be specifically designed with dividers for items like hosiery, jewelry and lingerie. Locking drawers make certain that valuable jewelry is safe and easily accessible too.  Island countertops done in granite or tile not only are beautiful but serve as a staging area when preparing for a formal evening out.

Built in closets can be beautiful and functional at the same time. Aesthetic treatments such as raised panels on doors and crown molding add a finishing touch and can actually make the owner want to leave the closet doors open all of the time. Form and function can co-exist when laundry hampers and iron boards are also built in, but hidden from view.  With all of the options available, today’s master closet can be everything from strictly organized and efficient to wildly luxurious and elegant.
